After working with GE, CitiGroup, and Pitney Bowes, Mark joined the founding team at Alterna Capital as the Head of Analytics. Mark was the principal transactor on numerous Alterna aerospace investments, including many highly successful realizations. In 2020 Mark joined AEI as the founder of their Aerospace Leasing strategy, where he played a central role in fund raising and investment originations.
Founded in 2016, MidRail is a freight rail and investment company operating at the intersection between Class I and short line rail roads. The MidRail team was the original creator of the Precision Scheduled Railroad strategy that has been widely and successfully adopted in the industry. They were the principal and operator of the privatization and restructuring of the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad, the most successful operating spinout in US Rail history. Raj Gupta is an experienced private equity investor and has spent the past decade specializing in rail working on over $4 billion of transactions.
AmTech has been a leading maritime advisor to prominent private equity managers, international banks, maritime operating companies and shipyards since its founding in 2007. AmTech played a central role in the success of the MV American Phoenix project and international tanker projects at Alterna. Bob and Micah have also built several ground-breaking hybrid vessels in the US, including the first US hybrid electric cargo vessel.
Harry Toll
Managing Partner, CEO
Harry VickersToll has had a 40-year career building and leading successful businesses and investments in a range of core capital assets across energy, power, shipping, rail and other sectors. Harry co-founded and managed two multi-billion-dollar investment and asset management businesses and currently runs a private capital management firm on behalf of his family (H.F.Vickers).
From 2007 to 2019 Harry co-founded and was a Managing Partner of Alterna Capital Partners LLC, a private equity firm investing in Core Capital Assets, the core operation assets of capital-intensive industries. Harry led efforts to raise capital for Alterna’s two principal funds, totaling ~$1.2B of equity (deployed in ~$2.5B of assets). He served on Alterna’s Investment Committee and performed various hands-on and lead roles for origination, management, and realization for a range of portfolio companies and investments, including some of Alterna’s most innovative, profitable and challenging investments.
Prior to Alterna, Harry joined Citigroup in 1985, where he was elevated to ManagingDirector and would stay there for the next 18 years. There he co-founded and led a highly profitable business investing in a diversified portfolio of assets within the capital-intensive industries noted above. That business grew to approximately $2.25B of equity invested in ~$7B in assets, with consistently strong profitability, outstanding risk performance, and with numerous successful realizations. During that period, he became one of the few managing directors/business heads at Citi who also held a Senior Risk Officer designation.
Earlier in his career, Harry was a naval officer, co-developer of a patented nuclear energy facility, and an industry expert and asset manager for another major US financial institution.
Harry graduated from Purdue University with a BS inInterdisciplinary Engineering. He is a graduate of CitiGroup’s Institute of Global Finance and Senior Risk Officer Programs.
Paul Schaffer
Senior Partner, CFO/CCO
Paul Schaffer has over 35 years of finance and operations experience and more than 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry, primarily in private equity, commercial lending and leasing of core capital assets. He has worked directly with Mr. Toll for nearly thirty years, both at Citigroup and Alterna Capital Partners LLC.
For the past 14 years he has been the CFO of Alterna Capital Partners LLC, a registered investment advisor for four private equity funds, with investor commitments in excess of $1.2B. He has responsibility for all aspects of financial control, including accounting, tax, investor and regulatory reporting, as well as operations, cash management, and distributions. He is directly engaged in the analysis and structuring of transactions, conducts due diligence, and frequently interfaces with legal, accounting, banking, and tax professionals as potential investments are evaluated, negotiated and closed. He oversees and approves all audits, tax returns, and investment reporting. He also serves as the Firm’s human resource manager, and since 2018 has been the Firm’s CCO.
Prior to joining Alterna Capital Partners, he spent 19 years at Citigroup, primarily as the CFO/Controller for Citi’s Core Capital Assets business, which specialized in originating large-ticket equipment acquisitions and capital-intensive operating businesses.
Prior to joining Citigroup, he worked at the accounting firm of Arthur Young, where he was a senior auditor.
Paul is a C.P.A. and C.M.A. and he holds a Bachelor of Science in accounting from the State University of New York-Albany, and an M.B.A from Fordham University, where he was awarded the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence. He resides in Amherst NH.
